A Clinical Study of Intussusception in Infants and Children

Abstract

|
|
The material in this report is, based on 210 cases of intussusception which were treated, in department of general surgery and department of pediatrics of Busan National University Hospital: during-last 5 years and 7 months from January 1, 1969 to July 31 1973 and¢¥ the following results were obtained.
The highest incidence of age distribution was under 12 months of age which was about 65% of all cases. Sex incidence was 1. 9 for male for a female.
Higher incidence in seasonal distribution was in April and May.
Cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain in 100%, bloody stool in 87%, vomiting in
84.7%, abdominal mass in 82% and abdominal tenderness and rigidity in 43.3%.
Radiological findings were positive in 74.8% and barium fluoroscopic films were positive in 89%. The most common type of intussusception in infants and children was ileo-colic (74.8%). Barium reduction was successful in 73.2% and its recurrence was in 6.4% and recurrence for
operated cases in 2.4.%
The mortality was about 2.4% overall, manual reduction 5. 1% in ileosegmental resection, 8. 7% in ileo-colic segmental resection and 4. 0% in all operated cases.
